I love December, and I’ve been especially enjoying the cold temperature and rain here in San Diego. The season inspires me to create holiday-inspired graphics as a creative exercise. Giving myself time to create something for fun in the morning helps me prepare mentally for my clients during the day. It helps me try new things and experiment with color combinations.

The one above is a Christmas card concept and the one below is a digital illustration. With the “Joy” card, I wanted to create a card with a non-traditional palette. Creating this concept showed me that one of my goals for the near future is to strengthen my typography and logo design skills. I don’t give myself enough time to sift through fonts and tweak the type. Overall, I enjoyed creating this modern design and I’m thinking about sending it out as my Christmas card this year.

For the digital illustration below, I knew I wanted to create a Christmas tree with a blush and cobalt palette. I recently presented a similar color combination as a comp for a client and it wasn’t chosen. But since then I’ve been wanting to use it in my own work.

I hope to find inspiration for creative exercises every month of the year!
